In anticipation of the T20 World Cup 2024, former Sri Lankan cricketer Tilakratne Dilshan praised the young players selected for the tournament, highlighting their impressive cricketing skills.
Sri Lanka finds itself in a group with Bangladesh, South Africa, Nepal, and the Netherlands. They will kick off their campaign against South Africa on June 3. Dilshan, a former right-handed batsman, emphasized that the West Indies pitches are expected to offer significant turn, which will likely influence teams to include more spinners in their line-ups.
"West Indies pitches are known for turning. Everyone is aware that after the Super 8 stage, all matches are held in the West Indies. This prompts teams to opt for more spinners. Even Sri Lanka will need to rely heavily on their spinners. Some teams might even play three spinners because of the turning tracks," Dilshan explained to ANI.
Dilshan, now 47, also reflected on the challenging void left by the retirement of cricket legends Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara.
"When Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara, and I retired around the same time, it created a significant gap that was hard to fill. However, our young players have stepped up and performed admirably. I hope they can maintain their form in this World Cup," Dilshan added.
The tournament begins on June 1, with the opening match featuring the United States and Canada.
