Eulogizing the historic win by Payal Kapadia at Cannes, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi showed his highest form of pride as he declared her a winner of the 2024 Grand Prix in cinema making her the first Indian to win such an award in that festival.  He said in his congratulations note that this was a great honor for the Indian film industry. “Payal Kapadia has done India proud by winning the grand prize at the 77th Cannes Film Festival for All We Imagine as Light,” said PM Modi.

The worldwide stage still dazzles with her outstanding talent, where she explores imagery only native to this country. The award for excellence is a great honor that will also motivate young Indian filmmakers.

Her film, *All We Imagine As Light*, which is her first full-length feature film, took home the second most important award following Palme d’Or during the closing ceremony of the 77th edition on Saturday evening.

The movie by Kapadia is the first Indian film in thirty years and the first ever by an Indian woman director to be shown at the main competition section. Last time, “Swaham,” Shaji N Karun’s 1994 film, was selected from India to run in this category.
