Minister for General Education V. Sivankutty acknowledged on Saturday that there was a slight gap between the number of students passing the SSLC examinations and the availability of Plus One higher secondary seats in Malappuram. Despite this, the district saw a higher number of applications for admission compared to last year.

A total of 4,65,960 applications were received for Plus One single-window admission by Saturday, the final day for online submissions. This is an increase from last year when 4.59 lakh applications were submitted. The number of students passing the SSLC exams increased by 7,701 from the previous year.

Of the 4,65,960 applications, 4,32,428 were from students who passed the SSLC exams. Additionally, 23,699 applications came from students who passed the CBSE Class X exams and wished to switch to the State syllabus for higher secondary education, while 2,461 applications came from ICSE students. This marks a decline from last year's CBSE applicants, which numbered 25,350, and ICSE applicants, which numbered 2,627.

Malappuram received the highest number of applications at 82,434, up from 80,764 the previous year, indicating a strong demand for higher secondary seats in the district.

In Malappuram, where 79,730 students qualified for higher studies, there are 33,925 seats available in the government sector and 25,765 in the aided sector, totaling 59,690 seats.

Applications also increased in Kozhikode and Palakkad compared to last year. Kozhikode received 48,140 applications, followed by Palakkad with 45,222 applications. Thrissur saw 40,283 applications. The available seats in these districts are 38,400 in Kozhikode, 31,560 in Palakkad, and 33,360 in Thrissur, across both government and aided sectors.

Wayanad had the lowest number of applicants at 12,087.

Among the applicants in Malappuram, 79,637 were SSLC candidates, 2,031 were from the CBSE stream, and 12 were from ICSE. Kozhikode had the second-highest number of SSLC applicants with 45,597, followed by Palakkad with 42,850.

Students from other districts submitted 44,435 applications, with Malappuram receiving the highest number from other regions at 7,621.

Minister Sivankutty, who has consistently promised that all students passing the SSLC exams will have opportunities for Plus One education, stated that the issue in Malappuram will be resolved. He suggested that political factors were influencing the protests over Plus One seats and assured that the problem would be addressed through three rounds of allotment in the main phase and a fresh call for applications, with government intervention if necessary.
